The Role of Intestinal Bacteria in Heart Disease

Increased consumption of red meat has long been known as a risk factor for heart disease. Surprising results which were recently published in the journal Nature Medicine suggest that this increase is due to certain intestinal bacteria which transform a molecule found in meat into a compound that is toxic for blood vessels.
