The good side of free radicals
The role of oxygen and its derivatives is quite complex and ambivalent. Oxygen is essential to life but its metabolites, the free radicals, generate oxidative stress which has long been suspected of participating in aging and in the development of several diseases. Some completely unexpected findings indicate that, in contrast, these molecules are absolutely essential to maintaining good health and they are involved in extending life expectancy.
